‘Simpsons’ Renewed For Historic 29th and 30th Seasons

Just when you thought Matt Groening’s famous family couldn’t surprise you, Fox shows ahead and drops a present in your lap.

According to a news story from The Hollywood Reporter, Fox has already gone ahead and renewed The Simpsons for a two-season pick-up. The most recent episode, the show’s 600th (and the annual Treehouse Of Horror anthology), netted 3.6 million live-plus seven ratings in the coveted 18-49 demo. Following the planned 30th season The Simpsons will have aired a total of 669 episodes. That number will best the total number of episodes that Gunsmoke aired five decades ago, with 635 episodes.

“Take that, Gunsmoke!” said Homer Simpson in a statement. “You lost a race you didn’t even know you were running!”

The Simpsons is already the longest-running scripted show in television history, currently in the midst of its 28th season. The show has survived numerous showrunner changes and also spawned a movie release in 2007, as well as a massive attraction at Universal Studios. Matt Groening, Al Jean, and James L. Brooks serve as executive producers.

The Simpsons will air all 600 episodes of the series to date in full on a multi-week marathon airing on FXX starting after Thanksgiving. New episodes of the show airs Sunday nights at 8:00pm on local Fox affiliates.
