Shonda Rhimes on 300 Episodes of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’: ‘It’s not Just a Show’

Fans of Grey’s Anatomy, having just watched the 300th episode, are rightfully emotional right now. The episode had ties to some of our favorite characters no longer in the series and had a super emotional moment for Meredith and everyone who loves her.

Including her mom.

If you haven’t seen it yet, we’ll leave you to figure that part out.

So to commemorate 300 episodes, Shonda Rhimes gave an interview about what the series means to her and how important all of the relationships are, but especially the strong female characters. She also admitted though it’s very personal, that there’s a part of her in Meredith Grey’s character.

I never like to tell people I identify most with Meredith Grey. It feels too personal. Like a whisper I didn’t even tell myself. But there’s no way I could create this show and NOT identify with Meredith Grey.’

She went on to say that it wasn’t a direct reflection of her but that there were many pieces of her life sprinkled into the series. There’s something personal about her in every episode, it’s sort of a diary.

‘I’ll tell you a secret. That’s me in the show. Not literally but… yeah, kinda literally. Season after season, pieces of my life are on that screen. … My life is in every episode. Who I am is in every episode. For me, the show is sort of a diary — I can watch it and know exactly what was going on in my real life when an episode was written.’

We had a feeling that Rhimes had a deep connection with the series but Meredith has been through some serious struggles and heartache; maybe it’ll make people more empathetic towards Rhimes.

Grey’s Anatomy airs during TGIT at 8 pm.
