Ross Butler is making the move from the small screen to the big one as Variety recently confirmed that the Riverdale alum and current cast member on Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why has just joined the ever-growing Shazam roster.
While the details of his role are being kept very much under wraps, the film will follow Billy Batson (Asher Angel), a young boy who can transform into an adult superhero by saying “Shazam!” Zachary Levi will be playing the titular role of Shazam whose heroic abilities all stem from the ancient gods and historical figures for which his name in an acronym for – Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury. The film will be directed by Lights Out’s David F. Sandberg and was written by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke.
Butler recently starred in Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, which was a critical and audience success last year. The show was almost immediately picked up for a second season despite already tackling all of the original source material of Jay Asher’s novel. The renewal resulted in Butler deciding to leave his role as Reggie Mantle on The CW’s Riverdale to continue filming for 13 Reasons Why.
Shazam is expected to hit theaters April 5, 2019.
Having studied Media & Writing at James Madison University, I always knew that I wanted to do some type of creative writing, but being able to write about zombies, Starks, and superheroes on a daily basis for Fan Fest is my actual dream. While I probably shouldn’t be as proud as I am to be so similar to Nick Miller, I do hope to one day write my own “Pepperwood Chronicles’.
