SDCC: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Cast Unearths New Trailer and Series Details

Over 50 years ago, Star Trek was introduced to the world and quickly became an iconic cultural phenomenon.  The television series inspired developments in science and technology helped bring fans together by breaking down social barriers and teleported viewers through an intergalactic world during each episode.

This fall, a brand new set of Starfleet commanders will take on new missions and discover new worlds and life forms in the CBS new series Star Trek: Discovery.  Members of the cast attended the panel at San Diego Comic-Con including Sonequa Martin-Green, Jason Isaacs, Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Mary Wiseman, Anthony Rapp, and James Frain as well as executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Gretchen J. Berg, Aaron Harberts, Heather Kadin and Akiva Goldsman.  The panel was moderated by Rainn Wilson who is best known for his role on The Office and who will also be playing the role of Harry Mudd who is described as “the charismatic con man and intergalactic criminal that was first introduced in the original “Star Trek” television series.”

Much to the delight of those in attendance, the panel provided us with a brand new trailer for the upcoming series.  Check out the stellar clip below:

We also found out some awesome details about the upcoming series.  First things first, the Klingons will, of course, speak Klingon but, they will have subtitles!  Though, if you already speak Klingon, you’ll be able to understand them.

We found out some details about Sonequa Martin-Green’s character.  Her character was raised on Vulcan by her surrogate father, Sarek, and her human mother, Amanda. So, she’s Spock’s sister then?

Perhaps the most notable revelation from the panel comes from Anthony Rapp.  Rapp revealed that Wilson Cruz will be joining the cast of the series and will be playing his character’s love interest and partner!  Rapp continues by noting he will be playing the first openly gay character in the history of the Star Trek television series.  He is extremely proud to play this character and of the fact that he is a scientist!

Sonequa Martin-Green perhaps perfectly captured the heart of all that is behind Star Trek when she commented on the diversity and unity the show embodies.  She said:

“Star Trek has always been pictorial of diversity and universality and unity. If you say you love the legacy of Star Trek but you don’t love that, then you’ve missed it. I encourage you to come on the journey with us.”

We can’t wait to begin on that journey with Star Trek: Discovery!  The series will premiere on September 24th on CBS!

Below is the description for the upcoming series:

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY will follow the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new life forms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself.
