Rumors that Gurira was leaving the series surfaced back February of this year, but it was never confirmed until just now. Her exit from the series could possibly be a link or connection between the show and the previously announced films currently in the works and beginning production later this year.
Gurira would be the third leading actor to exit the series following in the footsteps of Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan who both exited the show in its ninth season. Gurira’s departure is not entirely surprising given her additional successes outside of the television series. Her role in Marvel’s Black Panther earned her critical acclaim. she’s also an accomplished playwright and philanthropist.
The Walking Dead panel was led by Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick and included creative team Scott M. Gimple, Angela Kang, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Dave Alpert, and Greg Nicotero. Cast members Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Avi Nash, Cooper Andrews, Ryan Hurst, Nadia Hilker, Eleanor Matsuura, and Cailey Fleming were also present in addition to Gurira.
The series returns to AMC on Sunday, October 6th.
