In late 2015, Sam Smith announced that he’d be taking a break to focus on his personal life and to enjoy some time off from his busy schedule. His immense talent meant that his career absolutely took off and didn’t slow down until he decided to take it into his own hands and press pause. He gives all of himself to his music, so he was undoubtedly tired and taking time off to refuel would only mean that his next album and tour would be that much better.
He announced the hiatus in 2015, and at his last performance in the states at the Hollywood Bowl, he told ET that it felt right.
‘I am sad, but also it feels right. It’s my last performance in America, and it feels right to do it in such a beautiful setting.‘
He also explained that he’d been working nonstop for three years and that it was just right to go home and live. Sam is very open in his music, his lyrics, and his heart – so when he found love and then that love was gone, it was evident by the words he spoke at some concerts and the way he sang passionately about songs surrounding both love and loss.
‘I’ve been going now for three years nonstop and it feels right for me to just go home and just live my life and be a 23-year-old. My love life, the downs and ups, it never stops, so I’m always inspired by stuff like that, but it’d be good to spend some time dating.‘
When he went on hiatus, he also stepped away from social media, but he did check in a few times over the last (nearly) two years, and now he’s back in a big way.
On June 6th, he posted a series of photos in the studio with the caption ‘recording’ and we have to say, he’s one of the top 5 people we’ve anticipated music from this year – across all genres.

Sam has a touch, a passion, and an emotion when he sings; his songs are unlike that of most artists. He’s not afraid to be completely vulnerable and he brings his own music influences into his sound and makes it all his own.
We can’t wait to hear his next album, and if rumors are right, it should be here this September! If that’s true, the wait is already almost over. Are you looking forward to hearing his new album? Were you a big fan of In The Lonely Hour? Let us know.
