Now that Chlling Adventures of Sabrina is a very important thing (mark October 26th on your calendars!), we have all been told multiple times not to expect any crossovers between the new series and its sister show Riverdale. Although, long before Netflix stepped in to develop Sabrina as its own entity, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa had plans to bring everyone’s favorite teenage witch the dramatic town of Riverdale…as a villain!
[row]“We had said, ‘Maybe Season 2 will be like [the supernatural comic book series] Afterlife With Archie. We’ll do a big genre switch, and it will be horror… and Sabrina could come and be the antagonist.’ There was even a time when we talked about the Season 1 cliffhanger being the arrival of Sabrina,” the showrunner told EW.[/row]
Thankfully, the popular CW noir-drama chose to stay true to its roots and keep the supernatural elements of Greendale separate.
[row]“It felt like if Riverdale is crime and pulp and all that stuff, then Sabrina could be horror. It felt like there was a separation between Greendale and Riverdale — magic should exist in Greendale, but not in Riverdale.”[/row]
Of course, once the news of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina broke, fans began speculating that some sort of crossover between the two series would be inevitable and while it’s not completely out of the realm of possibility, the chances are slim to none. At the Television Critics Association summer press tour, CW President Mark Pedowitz said that “there will be no cross connection” between the two series mainly due to them being on separate networks.
[row]“Sabrina was originally, as you know, in development here, but the studio came to us — Peter came to me actually — and said, ‘We have a two-year commitment from Netflix.’ And I said, ‘Go with [Netflix], it’s the right thing to do for your business.’”[/row]
Jon Goldwater, CEO of Archie Comics and an executive producer on Riverdale and Sabrina, echoed Pedowitz’s comments earlier this year as well.
[row]”Right now, we’re not thinking about that. They’re two separate entities for right now.”[/row]
We, for one, are so glad that things worked out the way they did because after seeing the full trailer for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina we can’t wait to see Sabrina Spellman as the badass heroine of her own story. You can check out the full trailer below!
Having studied Media & Writing at James Madison University, I always knew that I wanted to do some type of creative writing, but being able to write about zombies, Starks, and superheroes on a daily basis for Fan Fest is my actual dream. While I probably shouldn’t be as proud as I am to be so similar to Nick Miller, I do hope to one day write my own “Pepperwood Chronicles’.
