Ryan Murphy Pulls Mass Shooting Scene from Upcoming AHS: Cult Episode

In the wake of the tragedy in Las Vegas on October 1st, Ryan Murphy decided to edit an upcoming episode of American Horror Story: Cult.

The episode was rumored to begin with a mass shooting, but Murphy didn’t think right now was the appropriate time to have that aired on television. Murphy announced his decision at The New Yorker Festival today.

‘I just made the decision that I’m going to have all of that violence be shown for the most part off camera.’

He went on to say that it wasn’t an easy decision, but he didn’t want to subject his fans to something that could be triggering. He was thinking about victims’ rights and how many people are upset about the state of the world right now.

‘Should you air it? Should you not air it? How do you be sensitive? My point of view was I believe I have the right to air it, but I also believe in victims’ rights, and I believe that now is probably not the week to have something explosive or incendiary in the culture because someone who was affected might watch that and it could trigger something or make them feel upset. So our decision was to re-edit it and I felt that that was the right move. Nobody ever talks about victims’ rights. That’s sort of a weird emotional discussion that’s never bridged… But I felt great sympathy for people who were affected, certainly, and family members and loved ones and people who are upset about the way the world is.’

This news comes just days after the announcement was made that Marvel and Netflix pulled a panel for The Punisher from NYCC for gun-violence.

This season of AHS has already drawn in more critique than Murphy’s past seasons, but in large, it was because of what viewers took as his intentions for the season. It has a political theme, but it is not about Trump or Clinton, it’s about the bigger picture.

‘I didn’t want to write about Trump, I didn’t want to write about Clinton. I wanted to write about both the people that surround them who have this belief system and when that belief system toppled.’

American Horror Story: Cult airs on AMC Tuesdays at 10 pm.
