Rosie Perez Cast as Renee Montoya in ‘Birds of Prey’

Rosie Perez is headed for the birds.

According to The Wrap, Rosie Perez, Academy Award nominee, is expected to join Harley Quinn’s girl gang in the  DC film Birds of Prey. She will play Renee Montoya, an openly gay police detective at the Gotham City PD. During The New 52 comics, she takes on a costumed identity as the Question.

She joins other cast members Jurnee Smollet-Bell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Black Canary and Huntress.

Perez’s breakout role was Tina in Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing. She went on to play roles in Ron Shelton’s White Men Can’t Jump, and Peter Weir’s Fearless. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in the latter. Perez recently appeared on NBC’s Rise and was the voice of Dulce in Disney’s Elena of Avalor.

The Birds of Prey villain will be Black Mask, a foe of Batman cast who hasn’t premiered on the big screen before. Sundance World Cinema dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting winner Cathy Yan is set to direct the film. Yan is best known for writing and directing Dead Pigs, a film which won the her the award mentioned above. This makes her the third female filmmaker to join DC universe. The film is known as the United Girl Gang Movie at Warner Bros. at the moment. In addition, the former Wall Steet Journal reporter will be the first Asian woman to direct a DC film.

The female heroes will fly into theaters on February 7th, 2020.
