‘Roseanne’ Revival: Johnny Galecki in Talks to Reprise His Role and New Series Details Revealed

Earlier this year, ABC announced that the hit sitcom Roseanne would be making a come back with much of the original cast returning.

The limited, eight-episode revival series will feature the original cast members Roseanne Barr (Roseanne), John Goodman (Dan), Laurie Metcalf (Jackie) and Sara Gilbert (Darlene), Michael Fishman (DJ) and Lecy Goranson (Becky).  Sarah Chalke, who also played the role of Becky in the later season, is said to appear in the series as well but, in a different role.

Big Bang Theory‘s Johnny Galecki had not planned on being a part of the revival despite playing a key role on the series as David, Darlene’s on again, off again boyfriend, however, he is now said to be in talks to reprise the role.

During the Television Critics Association press tour, ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey spoke about the series tone and about how the revival will handle the original series’ ending.  The new series will have the same overall tone as the early seasons of the original series but will also be dealing with modern day issues and topics.  When asked about the topical nature of the revival and just how “topical” issues on the series would get, Dungey said:

“Very topical, very topical.  We’re not talking specifically about the universe that we live in in that way, but we are addressing issues like foreclosure, how difficult it is for people to get medical insurance. We’re talking about topics in a bigger, broader way. We’re not necessarily talking about he occupants of the White House.”

Additionally, fans of the original series will remember that at the end of the original series run, Dan passed away from a heart attack, however, John Goodman is confirmed to reprise the role.  How exactly is that working?  Well, Dungey said that the series won’t completely ignore the finale episode however, it was confirmed that Goodman’s character will be alive and well in the revival series.

Earlier this year at ABC upfronts, the network released the first teaser trailer and a description of the show.  You can check out both below.  The Roseanne reboot is expected to begin filming in October in front of a live studio audience and is expected to air during the 2018 television season.

“When it premiered on ABC, the series broke new ground for its realistic portrayal of a working-class family, the Conners, barely scraping by in the fictional town of Lanford, Illinois. it also dominated the ratings as one of the highest-rated television series on the air for its near-decade run. A comedy about ordinary people who faced day-to-day survival with a sense of absurdity of it all, the inimitable Roseanne was its epicenter.

“Lauded for its humor, relevance, warmth and honesty, the Conner family will continue to deal with the economic challenges of living pay check to paycheck in 2018. In its nine seasons on ABC, in addition to being a primetimeratings hit, the series won a Peabody Award and a Golden Globe Award for best television series (comedy or musical). Barr and Goodman each won Golden Globes for best performance by an actress and actor. Barr went on to win an Emmy as lead actress, and Metcalf won two supporting actress Emmys for her work on the series.”
