‘Rookie of the Year’ Remake in Development at 20th Century Fox
Hey, Gardenhoser! It looks like there may be a new version of the classic 1990s film Rookie of the Year in the works at 20th Century Fox!
Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox is planning a remake of the film, though very little details are known at this time. Their planning is in the very, very early stages, however, the studio is said to be making a deal with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) to write the script. Gregor may also be in line to direct the upcoming remake should things move forward beyond the planning stages. Gregor and Mand most recently worked together to write and direct Most Likely to Murder which premiered at SXSW festival this year and stars Rachel Bloom and Adam Pally.
The original 1993 film starred Thomas Ian Nicholas, Gary Busey, and Daniel Stern (who also directed the film). Nicholas played the role of Henry Rowengartner, a young kid with a love for the game of baseball. The only problem was he wasn’t that good at the game until a freak accident changed his life. Rowengartner was running, slipped on a ball and completely shattered his dominant arm. After months a healing, his cast was finally removed and he discovered that he could now throw a baseball better than any major leaguer which prompted him to be drafted by the Chicago Cubs. Rowengartner’s special abilities would then help lead the team to the World Series, but not without some hilarious challenges along the way.
Just a couple of weeks ago, Nicholas made a joke on his Twitter page about it being time for a remake of the film. Looks like he was right.

The original film recently celebrated its 25th anniversary during which Nicholas arrived early to a theater showing the 90s classic and led the crowd in a round of the “pitchers got a big butt,” chant from the film.
