Despite the events of Avengers: End Game, we haven’t seen the last of Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark.

Marvel studio executives, per Deadline, have confirmed that Iron Man will be back for the last time in 2020’s Black Widow alongside the also now deceased Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johannsen). The details of his return are still unknown.

The cast list also includes Rachel Weisz, David Harbour, Ray Winstone and Florence Pugh.

Not much else has been revealed, however, Marvel has confirmed that the film will be a prequel to the Infinity War saga, and will be set in the aftermath of 2016’s Captain American: Civil War.

According to, Downey Jr.’s role may just be a recycled cameo. A scene from the third Captain America film was shown at public events, but not made available.

In that scene, Natasha and Tony have one final confrontation after the final battle with Winter Soldier and Iron Man, echoing their earlier argument when Natasha tells Tony “we played this wrong.” Tony tells Natasha to run, which is what sends her to go into hiding with the rest of the Secret Avengers.

Director Cate Shortland is excited to take on the project because she was immediately drawn to Black Widow.

“I think that’s what drew me to the story, [Black Widow]’s got so many secrets, she’s got so much vulnerability and I think that’s what makes her such a great heroine. In this film we get to understand her past and put the pieces of herself together and come out a whole person,” said Shortland.

Black Widow hits theaters May 1, 2020.
