Robert Downey Jr. is Remaking of One of Alfred Hitchcock’s Most Beloved Films

At first glance, it may appear as if Robert Downey Jr. has stepped away from the acting world after captivating viewers with Avengers: Endgame in 2019. However, this couldn’t be further from reality! With multiple projects coming soon to a screen near you, recent reports suggest that RDJ has his sights set on starring in an updated version of Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic movie Vertigo!

Paramount Pictures has just acquired the project and is still in its developmental phase, claims Deadline. If everything goes according to plan, Robert Downey Jr. will be playing the lead role originated by Jimmy Stewart; a retired police detective who suffers from vertigo due to a harrowing on-the-job experience.

Steven Knight, the brilliant mind behind See and Peaky Blinders, has been tapped to pen this project. Davis Entertainment’s John Davis and John Fox will be joining forces with Team Downey—the film production company of Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey–to produce the movie in a powerful partnership.

Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo revolutionized the film industry and has become a classic for its dizzying dolly zoom shots. This special camera effect was used to mimic acrophobia, or fear of heights- conveying James Stewart’s character’s vertiginous distress. Interestingly enough, Steven Spielberg even incorporated this same technique in his 1975 blockbuster Jaws – heightening Roy Scheider’s Sheriff Brody’s terror on that infamous beach scene.

In today’s cinema world, where remakes reign supreme over original works of art, it is unsurprising that Paramount has decided to give the 1958 classic a modern facelift. With advances in film technology and effects available for use in this century, Hitchcock’s daunting dolly zoom should be much easier to recreate than before – only time will tell if this remake will measure up!

Robert Downey Jr. has plenty of projects in store, such as Vertigo, Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer coming out this summer, A24 and HBO’s The Sympathizer, plus a third Sherlock Holmes movie.
