According to EW, Andrew Lincoln stated that he would be returning to Senoia, GA very soon to shadow a director in order to fully prepare to direct an episode or two in Season 10. While this news makes total sense with Colman Domingo directing episodes of Fear The Walking Dead and Michael Cudlitz directing an episode of The Walking Dead this season, it’s a lot of fun to explore the theory that Andrew Lincoln could be returning to Georgia for more than just a bit of shadowing.
All we know so far is that Rick Grimes will exit the show in the first half of Season 9. We have no idea how this will happen, but, AMC has made it clear that it is going to happen whether we like it or not. So, let’s explore this idea: what if Rick Grimes doesn’t die, but, just walks off into the sunset? This could leave his story open-ended and allow for the viewers to see a return of the beloved Rick Grimes at some point in the future. Now, with that being said…could Rick Grimes be making a brief return before Season 9 wraps up?
While it is common for actors to get behind the camera for long running series such as: Entourage, Friends, Breaking Bad, House and more; it seems that it is done with the understanding that with a show running for a long period of time, the series becomes a well-oiled machine in that it gives free reign with the direction of an episode. In the past, some of the best episodes of other series are directed by the actors in the show; as they have a firm knowledge of the world the characters are living in…because, they portray them on-screen.
The fact that Andrew Lincoln would be going back to Senoia after leaving the series to have family time/step away from the character is quite interesting. Besides, if Andrew Lincoln just randomly reappeared in the small town of Senoia, GA, word would get out that Andy is back filming and everyone would know right away that either reshoots are happening, or, Rick Grimes is BACK. It’s also quite interesting that the site who broke the news is Entertainment Weekly, a site famous for being the go-to for all TWD related news. If a network wanted to cover up a super secret appearance, this would be the way to do it.
As of now, this is just one giant conspiracy theory within The Walking Dead universe, but, it’s a lot of fun to think about and insanely exciting for fans of the show either way. With Andy being such a passionate performer and a lot of the actors looking up to him on set, fans are already preparing for what could be one of the best episodes of the series with Mr. Lincoln behind the camera.
As a fan, I’m excited either way and had a good feeling that Andy couldn’t stay away forever.
The Walking Dead Season 9 premieres October 7th at 9/8c on AMC.
