‘Pretty Little Liars’ A.D. Was Right Under Our Noses

Tuesday evening saw the end of an era. Pretty Little Liars has been with us for the past 7 years and this ending was definitely bittersweet.

I’ll assure you that it’s not as bad as How I Met Your Mother or Gossip Girl. At least in my opinion it isn’t.

Recap: Spencer has a twin sister named Alex Drake who became A.D. because she was mad that Spencer got the good life and she went to an orphanage in England. Alex had been impersonating Spencer off and on since Charlotte’s death.

Alex met Wren and he told her about this family that she never knew about and he introduced her to Charlotte who told her about Spencer and the liars and the A game.

A.D. was right under our noses this whole time. Our first glimpse of Alex impersonating Spencer was when Hanna was dreaming and Spencer appeared to comfort her. The next was when Toby was leaving with Yvonne and Spencer asks for a kiss goodbye.

“We were all sweating bullets over what she was going to wear to look like Spencer, how good she would be at imitating her, how uncomfortable she might be, how much it might throw her off. But the fans interpreted it as Spencer being nervous about saying goodbye to Toby. It was wonderful! They filled in all the blanks,” said Troian Bellisario who plays Spencer and Alex.

Now that I think about it, Spencer had a couple moments where she was acting a little off. Just like when Ezra was at the airport and sees “Spencer” talking to Wren. Right before that scene, Spencer was at the Lost Woods, so it’s a little fishy that she would be at the airport. That and all of the times where Spencer and Toby hooked up, it all just seemed to far-fetched.

I’m not going to lie, I was a bit disappointed to hear that Alex was A.D., it felt like a cop out- the whole evil twin thing. Then once I thought about it, this all makes sense. I just wish we had more than two hours with Alex Drake. I actually thought A.D. was going to be Mona or Melissa.

It turns out that Troian was against Spencer having a twin too. But then was talked into it because Rosewood is such a fantastical place. It isn’t possible for one person to be everywhere at once and have constant watch of people in the real world, but in Rosewood it is.

“Once you accept those circumstances, then you get to just play in that sandbox,” said Troian. “Yeah, you could roll your eyes, like, “Oh, God, we’re doing an evil twin?” But it’s so rare to get to tell a story that’s serious in one moment and totally wackadoo in the next. And you’re playing in a universe where it’s not only accepted—but it’s expected. As an actor, it’s my job to give a performance that’s as grounded and real as possible. But in the world of this show, if I’m given the opportunity to play an evil, British twin, then I’m going to do it and have a blast. When else do you get to do that?”

Spencer having a twin also makes sense because Spencer always had this weird connection to Radley. “The whole arch of Spencer going to Radley and feeling at home there, having a connection to the place, feeling like she had a history there… Maybe it was fortuitous, or maybe it helped lead Marlene to this idea, but those parts of Spencer’s story fit perfectly into the revelation that Radley is actually where Spencer was born, that she is a part of its history,” Troian said.

This was the part that made me believe the ending. Twins tend to be common in some families and it brings a connection to the earlier seasons.

All I know is that I’m glad I know who A.D. is and that I didn’t see it coming. I was definitely surprised. It also isn’t as ridiculous as how we found out that Dan Humphrey is Gossip Girl or the awful reason as to how Ted and Robin end up together. I could’ve done without the British accent, though.

This series was amazing and I don’t regret spending my Tuesday evenings staring at my TV. The ending was perfect is the most pretty little twisted way.

Were you surprised by the A.D. reveal?
