Presidential Race 2016: A ‘Roast’ of a Race
It is closing in on that time; a time that can and will change our country forever. Election Day. Take a look at the two candidates here. We have Hilary Clinton who, if elected, will become the United States of America’s first woman president. Then we have Donald Trump, an extremely successful businessman, who spent years building himself up to where he is today. Last night, the day after their final debate, both presidential candidates attended the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner; a fundraising event for Catholic Charities. (Its 71st Year, as a matter of fact).
After three rounds of intense debates, the dinner was not only meant to serve as an extremely meaningful charity event, but as an event where the two candidates could really express themselves in a more relaxed and slightly comedic environment. Now, when I says ‘comedic’ environment, I’m referring to a point and time where both candidates could maybe take a step back from their podiums and enjoy the company of their friends and family, and socialize with the public in a more friendly environment. I mean sure, when I go to a party or a charity event, I like to laugh and have a great time. However, the ‘comedy’ of this night went an entirely different direction that what you would expect at a charity event.
Both of the candidates took their turns speaking, but each of their speeches wound up going from statements and promises…. to minor jabs and ‘roasts’ at each other.
Trump spoke first, and after all his speeches, he managed to still make a joke about Hilary’s ongoing email server saga.
“And even tonight, with all of the heated back and forth between my opponent and me at the debate last night, we have proven that we can actually be civil with each other. In fact, just before taking the dais, Hillary accidentally bumped into me, and she very civilly said, ‘Pardon me.’ “
It was a direct reference to the FBI’s decision to not charge Clinton over her use of a private email server — and Trump’s claims that he’d prosecute her over the matter if he becomes president. He continued:
“And I very politely replied, ‘Let me talk to you about that after I get into office.’ “
He then continued on:
I got the chance to meet all the people who work so hard to get Hillary elected. There they are: the heads of NBC, CNN, CBS, ABC, there’s the New York Times right over there and the Washington Post — they’re working overtime.
Clinton, smiled throughout Trumps ‘roasts’. But when it was her turn she also let her opponent have it, ribbing him over his recent allegations that the election might be rigged, and that he may not accept the results of the vote.
“It’s amazing I’m up here after Donald. I didn’t think he’d be OK with a peaceful transition of power.”
“Sharing a stage with Donald Trump is like, well, nothing really comes to mind. Donald wanted me drug tested before last night’s debate. … I am so flattered that Donald thought I used some sort of performance enhancer. Now, actually, I did. It’s called preparation.”
I will say this, this election has certainly been the most… interesting of my generation. As much as I enjoy a good ‘roast’ every now and then, enough is really enough. I would like to see more conversations and topics on how they will benefit our great country, and less time taking jabs at each other.
