There’s a Prequel to ‘The Sandlot’ in the Works!
20th Century Fox is giving one of its most beloved, cult classic films the prequel treatment. Deadline reports that the studio is working on a prequel for the 1993 coming-of-age, fan-favorite film The Sandlot. The project is in the early development stages, however, the film’s original writer and director David Mickey is onboard to co-write the script along with Austin Reynolds. Colin Greten and Daria Cercek are overseeing the project for 20th Century Fox.
The original film took place in the early 1960s and followed Scotty Smalls who had just moved into town. Smalls finds it difficult to make friends at first until he finds the kids playing baseball over at a nearby sandlot field. So begins a magical summer adventure for Smalls and his newly found friends. In addition to the original film, there have been two straight-to-video sequels.
While it’s way too early for any casting or plot details to be released, Deadline reports that the prequel will reportedly focus on the origins surrounding the legend of “The Beast.” Fans of the original film will remember that The Beast is the name the boys had given to the junkyard guard dog living in the lot next door to their sandlot baseball field. “Whatever goes over that fence stays there. It becomes the property of the Beast until forever.”
The film recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, and just last week, the stars of the film became a social media viral sensation when they encountered an unsuspecting fan on the street wearing a shirt which reads, “You’re killing me, Smalls!” – one of the most quoted lines from the original film. The fan was oblivious to the fact that he had just met Smalls (played by Tom Guiry) and Ham (played by Patrick Renna). Check out the social media post from Renna (whose face was actually on the fan’s shirt) below:
Said nice shirt to this dude walking by us and he had no idea what we were talking about. Thought I would capture the moment. pic.twitter.com/mrx5mgNzDm

In addition to Guiry and Renna, the film also starred Mike Vitar (Benjamin “Benny” Franklin Rodriguez), Chauncey Leopardi (Michael “Squints” Palledorous), Victor DiMattia (Timmy Timmons), Marty York (Alan “Yeah-Yeah” McClennan), Shane Obedzinski (Tommy “Repeat” Timmons), Grant Gelt (Bertram Grover Weeks), Brandon Quintin Adams (Kenny DeNunez) and James Earl Jones (Mr. Mertle).
We can’t wait to see what 20th Century Fox comes up with for The Sandlot prequel.
