Name a more iconic duo than Ash and Pikachu. I’ll wait.
Although this may be suprising, Pokêmon is the highest grossing franchise of all time, trumping Marvel and Star Wars.
The franchise is estimated to have earned a whopping $59.1 billion since 1995 from cartoons, game sales, and other merchandise with the Pokemon name. Additionally, the iOS Pokemon Go game has raised the franchise’s awareness level to a notable high. Let’s put those numbers in a clearer perspective. The Star Wars franchise is the second on the all-time highest grossing franchises with $42.9 billion in sales but even though the number is quite impressive, Star Wars had a 20 year head start on Pokemon.
Coming in third, place is the Hello Kitty franchise which has about $41 billion in sales. The Harry Potter franchise is number 4 with about $246.4 billion, Nintendo’s Mario is number five with $26.2 billion, at number six we have the Batman franchise with $23.8 Billion. The Marvel Cinematic Universe takes number seven with an impressive $21.7 billion since 2008.
Pokémon was created in 1995 and is focused on fictional creatures which trainers catch and train to battle each other for sport. It started as video games for Nintendo Game Boy and has since grown to become the second-best selling video game franchise in history. Number one is Mario, but Pokémon is number one on the overall franchise record.
As of 2018, Pokémon fans have the Detective Pikachu movie to look forward to. It’s based off a widely popular video game of the same name Justice Smith, Kathryn Newton, Ken Watanabe, and Ryan Reynolds. The movie is set to be released on May 10, 2019.
