“Make it so!”
Star Trek fans can rejoice knowing that one of the franchise’s favorite captains will soon be coming home to Star Fleet.
At the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention on Saturday, long-time rumors of a brand new series being in the works were officially confirmed in the most epic way possible. Captain Jean-Luc Picard himself, acclaimed actor Sir Patrick Stewart, was greeted with elated cheers when he surprised panel attendees at the convention. Stewart then made the exciting announcement that he will be reprising his character from Next Generation in a brand new Star Trek series.

Stewart also posted to his social media accounts a heartfelt message announcing his return. In his eloquently worded message, Stewart says that when Next Generation wrapped filming, he felt his journey with Picard was complete at that time. Now, however, he finds himself, “excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions,” of the character. Check out Stewart’s full message below:
[row]”I will always be very proud to have been a part of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had run its natural course. It is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over.
During these past years, it has been humbling to hear stories about how The Next Generation brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration and leadership. I feel I’m ready to return to him for the same reason – to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times. I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavor to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more.”[/row]

According to Deadline, the new series will not be a Next Generation reboot. Rather, it will be a series following Picard on new journeys in his life. Star Trek: Discovery co-creator Alex Kurtzman will oversee the series at CBS TV Studios.
Stewart’s new series joins the expanding Star Trek universe with CBS All Access’ critically-acclaimed Star Trek: Discovery and the newly announced Star Trek: Short Treks series.
