Outlander Recap: “Heaven and Earth”

Battles are being waged on all sides this week. Claire is fighting to save lives aboard The Porpoise, while Jamie, Fergus, and Marsali are fighting for love aboard The Artemis. Claire has been pressed into service as ship’s surgeon to the Porpoise’s crew. They’re racing for Jamaica, but the crew may be falling faster than the wind can blow. Meanwhile, Jamie will stop at nothing to rescue her and he’s enlisting Fergus and Marsali’s help. Let’s look at the wins and losses via our Swords and Skins Scale.

*Spoiler Warning! The following recap contains spoilers for episode 310, “Heaven and Earth.” Do not read further if you have not seen the episode and wish to avoid spoilers. You’ve been warned.*

Sword Score: 10/10. The is the first perfect 10 of the season. Claire is running a tight ship (pun intended) and has introduced quite a few life-saving measures. The crew finds it difficult to adapt at first, but most fall in line as her methods start showing results. She identifies the source of the outbreak- a carpenter crew member turned kitchen aide- and the number of new cases drops dramatically. Claire is aided in her work by Elias Pound, a 14-year-old sailor who has been at sea half his life. The boy is a quick study, and together he and Claire begin to save more lives than they lose. When Elias becomes the final victim of the outbreak, it’s almost more than Claire can bear.

While working on the ship, Claire discovers that the crew encountered a Portuguese ship a few weeks before. She searches for information on the ship to see if it was the same ship that took Young Ian. Her search doesn’t yield any information on him, but she does discover something even worse. The one-eyed man from the print shop, Harry Thompkins, is aboard the Porpoise and has identified Jamie to Captain Leonard. Jamie is now wanted for sedition, high treason, and murder as the body of Sir Percival’s agent has been found. Captain Leonard intends to capture Jamie and turn him over to the authorities in Jamaica, using Claire as bait. Claire refuses to allow this and tries to escape with the help of her new friend, Anaka Johassen. When their first plan fails, Anaka builds Claire a raft. Knowing it’s her only chance to find Jamie and warn him before he is arrested, Claire takes the raft and leaps overboard.

Skin Score: 9.5/10. While Claire wages germ warfare, Jamie is fighting to return to her. He’s keeping his eyes on The Porpoise when it begins to sail away. He demands the crew follow, and succeeds in getting most of the men rallied to his cause. The Captain appears and ends that plan. He orders Jamie to be put under lock and key for the duration of the voyage. Not only does this keep Jamie from rescuing Claire, his seasickness also returns with a vengeance. Out of desperation, Jamie asks Fergus to help him escape from his cell and commandeer the ship. Fergus is horrified at the thought of mutiny, but Jamie insists that this is the reality of love. As a last-ditch effort to convince Fergus, Jamie tells Fergus that he’ll bless Fergus and Marsali’s marriage if he helps Jamie escape.

Fergus and Marsali debate what to do. Fergus wants to help his adoptive parents, but he also can’t put the woman he loves at risk. If Jamie’s plan fails, Fergus will be thrown into the brig with him. Marsali will then be left defenseless on a ship full of men. Fergus decides to act out of love for her and goes to Jamie empty-handed. He explains his position and tells Jamie that he does understand the true meaning of love. Meanwhile, Marsali goes to the Captain and asks for Jamie’s release on the condition that he promises not to rebel again. Jamie finally realized what Fergus has done- both protecting his wife-to-be and his father by preventing him from enacting a doomed plan. Jamie is released and gives his blessing for Fergus and Marsali to be married in Jamaica. Now, they just have to all make it there.
