There’s only room for one hysterical queen in the Best Actor category and that my friends, is reserved for the ever-talented Rami Malek. The already Golden Globe and Emmy winner received his first Academy Award nomination this morning for his turn as the late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. After taking home the Golden Globe for the part, Malek’s nomination seemed almost set in stone, but since the Oscars are notorious for surprising snubs, hearing his name called was still a beautiful moment for the actor.
[row]”I’m in Paris working…. Then the telephone started fluttering away, and it’s a beautiful snowy day, so there’s something quite magical the way it’s happening. It’s just something you never expect to happen. It’s like a distant dream that actors have and hope for to some degree. But it’s never really felt in the realm of possibilities — it’s a pretty joyous occasion to say the least,” Malek told Entertainment Weekly.[/row]
The Mr. Robot star also took to his personal Twitter account to express his gratitude to the cast and crew who helped bring Bohemian to life and to Mr. Mercury who he is “so profoundly humbled and thrilled to honor…” You can read the whole tweet below.
Thank you to the Academy for recognizing the work of so many from the cast and crew who made all of this possible. I have absolutely treasured playing Freddie Mercury and I am so profoundly humbled and thrilled to honor him this way.

Bohemian Rhapsody, which also took home Best Picture at the Golden Globe Awards, recently became the highest-grossing music biopic of all time with over $202 million at the US Box Office. Globally, the film has earned an astounding $800 million. With Malek leading the way, Bohemian Rhapsody details the genesis of one of music’s greatest rock bands of all time and the journey they embarked on that led them to their iconic performance at the 1985 Live Aid.
Malek, who has been starring on USA’s Mr. Robot since 2015, won the Emmy award for his performance in 2016 and with his recent Golden Globe win and upcoming Screen Actors Guild Award and BAFTA nominations, things are certainly shaping up for Malek to begin his sweep.
The 91st Academy Awards will air on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 8/7c on ABC.
Having studied Media & Writing at James Madison University, I always knew that I wanted to do some type of creative writing, but being able to write about zombies, Starks, and superheroes on a daily basis for Fan Fest is my actual dream. While I probably shouldn’t be as proud as I am to be so similar to Nick Miller, I do hope to one day write my own “Pepperwood Chronicles’.
