Normani Kordei shares Unnerving Story of Cyberbullying on DWTS

Normani Kordei from Fifth Harmony is a contestant on Dancing With the Stars, and if you’ve not kept up with the show this season, you’re going to want to see her dance number from Monday evening. It wasn’t just a performance that showcased her talent and passion, it was one that told a story – her story and the story of those before her.

Normani gave every bit of herself to the performance and if the dance itself wasn’t emotional enough, the moments after it certainly were. Normani bore her soul during her dance after sharing a story of heinous cyberbullying that left us all a bit choked up.

The piece is so symbolic of times that I’ve felt helpless and desperate. I got bullied terribly on social media. I did an interview. It was taken out of context completely and there were images. People were calling me the N word. It was really ugly. It was every time I went online it’s ‘Oh, how much we hate you. How talentless you are.’ They actually made images of me being whipped, beaten, hung.

People shared that she went on to say that she shouldn’t have to want to change the color of her skin so that people don’t hate her, just for existing. She also mentions, like many of us know in our own lives, that at the end of the day we all just desire to be loved. We want to feel accepted by the people we know and love and even by those we don’t. It’s hard to feel like you don’t fit in but it’s the hardest thing in the world to feel like you don’t fit in because society makes you feel like you should be…less you.

I shouldn’t want to change the color of my skin or texture of my hair or the fact that I’m a woman. I felt really alone, and just like everybody hated me.’

We all want to be loved. We all want to feel accepted, but when that doesn’t happen, then it just breaks you. … At the end of the day, I have to be me. I want to be able to look in the mirror and say I’m proud of that person and I love who you are.’

Julianne Hough had this to say about Normani’s dance: ‘You’re doing more than just dance. You’re creating art and you’re creating history.’

Carrie Ann Inaba issued an apology on behalf of the cyber bullies and told Normani that in her dance, she showed healing.

First of all, I want to say that I’m sorry for all that you’ve been through with the cyber bullying. but tonight, what I saw on this floor thanks to Val, your incredible choreography, and vision for this dance, was healing. Not only for you, not only did you heal – you offered all of us healing and I think at this moment in life, we could all use that. So I thank you for such a profound moment tonight.

Normani received a lot of love and support from the judges after her number on DWTS and we hope that she felt the love and support from people across the world.
