Are you ready for even more The Walking Dead? AMC has confirmed that a new spinoff series taking place within The Walking Dead universe is currently being developed.
Deadline reports that CEO Josh Sapan mentioned the new series during a quarterly earnings call with Wall Street analysts. When asked for further information about the spinoff, COO Ed Caroll said it’s in, “active development.” Caroll continued by saying, “We’re not at a stage where we’ll be announcing its plans to premiere, but we have hired creative people that have pitched story outlines. We feel very good about the development of that series. We’re not in a position to talk about partnerships in terms of other territories or ancillary windows, other than that there’s a healthy appetite for it and we’ve had a number of conversations with a lot of players in the space.”
AMC declined to comment further and did not share any additional details relating to the new series after Caroll’s initial remarks, but the confirmation that something is in the works is more than enough to get The Walking Dead fans excited.
The current season of The Walking Dead is essentially going through a complete overhaul. Season nine kicked off by adding new showrunner Angela Kang and also saw the shocking departures of series stars Andrew Lincoln (who played Rick Grimes) and Lauren Cohan (who played Maggie Rhee). Recently, it was also announced that Danai Gurira will be leaving the series in the show’s 10th season. The Rick Grimes character will be getting his own series of movies, so the universe is already beginning to expand even further outside of the comforts of just the main series.
Additionally, the show itself has undergone major changes in the ninth season after a six-year time jump happened to catapult the series into a new time era with new characters and lots of past to explore. Perhaps the new spinoff series will take a deeper look into what happened during those six years, or perhaps we will see the apocalypse from the eyes of a brand new set of survivors, similar to the premise behind Fear the Walking Dead. Time will tell, and hopefully, more information will become available soon.
