At one point Netflix was the perfect place to watch all of your old TV favorites, then it slowly became one of the leading mediums for original programming and now it’s officially turning heads with original films as well. The streaming giant has slowly been bringing on more and more A-list names including Will Smith, Brad Pitt, and Alexander Skarsgård to name a few, and last year’s Mudbound (below) has received an impressive three Academy Award nominations.
Now, according to Deadline, they’ve secured Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson to star in their upcoming film The Highwaymen, which follows two Texas Rangers- Hamer and Gault, who are drawn out of retirement to hunt down the notorious duo Bonnie and Clyde. The movie will also star Kathy Bates, John Carroll Lynch, Kim Dickens, Thomas Mann, and William Sadler.
The Highwaymen has been on the radar for a while before Netflix finally grabbed it, with Paul Newman and Robert Redford once in the running for the roles. The film will be directed by John Lee Hancock and was written by John Fusco. Harrelson and Costner will also produce in addition to Michael Malone and Rod Lake. Filming has started in Louisiana and it is expected to be released in 2018.
Harrelson is currently nominated for an Academy Award for his role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and will also be starring in the upcoming Star Wars film Solo: A Star Wars Story. Costner starred in last year’s Oscar favorite Hidden Figures, and most recently appeared in Molly’s Game and Paramount Network’s upcoming series Yellowstone.
Having studied Media & Writing at James Madison University, I always knew that I wanted to do some type of creative writing, but being able to write about zombies, Starks, and superheroes on a daily basis for Fan Fest is my actual dream. While I probably shouldn’t be as proud as I am to be so similar to Nick Miller, I do hope to one day write my own “Pepperwood Chronicles’.
