People may still be talking about that crazy close Super Bowl game or the devastating episode of This Is Us, but the only thing we want to talk about the moment is the huge news coming out of Netflix this Monday morning! The streaming giant just won the bidding war against Amazon and Hulu for the right’s to The Politician, an hour-long music-driven comedy starring Tony award winner Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen) with Oscar winners Barbra Streisand and Gwyneth Paltrow close to signing on. The Politician comes from the team behind Glee including the American Horror/Crime anthology series juggernaut Ryan Murphy as well as Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan.

According to Deadline, the series details are very much under wraps, but the show would “revolve around the politician aspirations of Platt’s Payton, a wealthy Santa Barbarian, and every season will revolve around a different political race his character is involved in.” Platt’s character is predicted to have some musical numbers as well. The roles of Streisand and Paltrow are unclear, but Streisand would most likely be directing a couple of episodes when she officially signs on.
Netflix has high hopes for the series because it already has a two-season straight-to-series order, an almost unattainable feat for any new show. However, Murphy seems to consistently fall as the exception to the rule seeing as his other upcoming Netflix series, a Nurse Ratched origin story starring Sarah Paulson, was also picked up for two seasons.
Ben Platt confirmed the news on Twitter this morning.

The Politician is the latest addition to Murphy’s already impressive new series roster which includes the recent FOX hit 9-1-1, the upcoming FX series Pose, as well as Paulson’s Ratched. Hopefully, more details about the series start to sprinkle out soon because we have a feeling that The Politician is definitely a show that everyone’s going to want to be talking about!
Having studied Media & Writing at James Madison University, I always knew that I wanted to do some type of creative writing, but being able to write about zombies, Starks, and superheroes on a daily basis for Fan Fest is my actual dream. While I probably shouldn’t be as proud as I am to be so similar to Nick Miller, I do hope to one day write my own “Pepperwood Chronicles’.
