“Blockbuster’s Hilarious Response to Netflix’s Crackdown on Password Sharing Goes Viral”

Netflix’s recent decision to charge subscribers for password sharing, a move that has received backlash from many users, has caught the attention of companies beyond the streaming giant. One unexpected participant in the conversation is Blockbuster, the former video store giant that has largely faded from the limelight. The official Blockbuster Twitter account, in a tweet that has since gone viral, chimed in with a clever reminder of their approach to sharing.

In the tweet, Blockbuster wrote, “A friendly reminder that when you used to rent videos from us, we didn’t care who you shared it with…as long as you returned it on time.” The tweet directly tagged the primary Netflix account, sparking humor and nostalgia among social media users.

Netflix’s crackdown on password sharing stems from its efforts to address declining subscriber numbers. In the past year, the company has been actively exploring ways to discourage account sharing. According to a shareholder letter, Netflix has witnessed a negative initial reaction from subscribers when announcing these measures. However, they have also observed increased acquisition and revenue as borrowers transition to their own accounts and existing members add “extra member” accounts.

As part of the crackdown, Netflix is introducing a new pricing structure. While the base pricing remains the same, an email sent by the company explains that additional users can be added for $7.99 per month each. These add-on members are currently limited to the Standard and Premium plans, priced at $15.49 and $19.99 per month, respectively. A Standard with Ads package will still be available at $6.99 per month. Notably, the new policy does not apply to plans created through partner companies.

Blockbuster’s lighthearted response serves as a reminder of a bygone era and adds a touch of humor to the ongoing discussion surrounding Netflix’s approach to password sharing.
