Netflix cancels ‘One Day At A Time’

Netflix has officially cancelled their sitcom One Day At A Time in a statement released via Twitter today. The news comes after weeks of speculation and campaigning from stars of the show and fans to get people watching and get a fourth season green lit.

Unfortunately it appears that showrunner Gloria Calderón Kellett’s campaign to save the show just didn’t work this time, after she posted to Twitter last month warning fans of the shows rocky fate.

It inspired a wave of love flowing through Twitter for the sitcom, from big and small names, all explaining just what a wonderful, heart warming, educational, fun, joy this show is, without even taking in to account the work it has done representing the latina community, those struggling with mental health and anxiety, addiction issues, religion, as well as trans and LGBTQ rights. Any show that can tackle all of these issues, without feeling like an after school special, and still make it’s fans laugh after every episode? That’s the work of geniuses. Busy Phillips even hired a skywriter to help spread this wonderful show.

Unfortunately, whilst the love and passion from the fanbase was clear to see, that fanbase was just not big enough for Netflix who posted the below statement to Twitter.

We’ve made the very difficult decision not to renew One Day At A Time for a fourth season. The choice did not come easily — we spent several weeks trying to find a way to make another season work but in the end simply not enough people watched to justify another season.

Thank you Norman Lear for bringing this series back to television. Thank you Gloria Calderon Kellett & Mike Royce for always making us laugh and never shying away from bravely and beautifully tackling tough subject matter in a meaningful way.

To Justina Machado, Todd Grinnell, Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rita Moreno: thank you for inviting us into your family. You filled this show with so much heart and warmth and love, it truly felt like home.

And to anyone who felt seen or represented — possibly for the first time — by ODAAT, please don’t take this as an indication your story is not important. The outpouring of love for this show is a firm reminder to us that we must continue finding ways to tell these stories.

Stars and fans of the show are obviously devastated, as you can see from the vast series of tweets posted below. Many are hoping that the show may be picked up by another network similar to the cancellation of Brooklyn Nine Nine, but there is little guarantee.

One Day At A Time may seem like a corny show, a little outdated and silly. But at it’s core, it spoke to real life people and gave voices to so many still unseen in mainstream media. It’s cancellation is a blow to so many, and while chances of it’s survival now look slim to none, our only hope is that it’s amazing cast and crew go forward to make even more vital and important work for us to enjoy. Thank you for giving us 3 years, and a sense of home and comfort. You don’t know how much you’ll be missed, Alvarez family.
