NBC’s ‘This Is Us’ Won’t be Moving to Thursday Nights After All

This Is Us fans can breathe a sigh of relief!  Earlier this month, NBC announced that the super popular show would be kicking off its second season by moving to Thursday nights however, the network has decided to change its mind.  NBC has, once again, redone its programming schedule and has moved the Pearson family back to their regular time slot on Tuesday nights.

Originally, Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt told reporters that they struggled with the final decision of moving the series:

We went back and forth about moving This Is Us to Thursday. There’s a case to be made for keeping the show where it was. While it’s a little risky, there’s a bigger case to be made about redoing Thursday night.

NBC’s original thoughts were to redo Thursday night’s “Must See TV” line up which used to include some of the network’s most popular series such as Friends, Seinfeld, Mad About You, Will & Grace and ER.

With the Will & Grace revival now set to air on Thursday nights, like the original run, the network may have been looking to beef up the evening with some strong showings however, Thursday night comes with many television obstacles.  For example, This Is Us would face interruption by NFL football coverage.  If the show were to remain on Tuesday nights, it would have a continuous back to back run of at least nine episodes before facing an interruption for another event.

As Entertainment Weekly points out, NBC will also be moving Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders  to follow This Is Us.

Competitively, NBC’s newly adjusted line up puts them in a better position against CBS’s comedy line up.  Will & Grace and Great News will now air opposite CBS’s Mom and Life in Pieces.  This is great news for Will & Grace since the series will no longer be facing CBS’s uber popular comedy The Big Bang Theory.
