My Year of Gaming: ‘Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony’

My Year of Gaming: Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony

I purchased a Playstation 4 at the beginning of 2017 and it is the first time I have had a console since Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword came out on the Wii. Naturally, I have a lot of catching up to do and my backlog is incredibly massive. During the course of a year, I played my way through 23 games, and I figured I would take the time to share a little bit about each game. Perhaps you’ve played them and want to hear another opinion, or maybe you’ve been holding off on investing in a particular game. Either way, it’s never a bad time to spread your love of gaming.

The final installment in the Danganronpa franchise, Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony (2017) finds 16 Ultimate students kidnapped and forced to participate in a game of mutual killing. As they unravel the truth behind the school they find themselves locked in, even more revelations come to light. Killing Harmony keeps you on your toes the entire way through and the final trial and truth behind everything has divided the fandom down the middle.

Much like its predecessors, the dynamics of the game remain the same with an investigation and class trial following the murder of a student. As you progress through the story, more areas of the school are unlocked and the trials themselves become more complicated. A few new elements are added to the class trial including the ability to lie. Instead of just being able to shoot truth bullets at discrepancies, you can use evidence to twist the truth and weed out those who might also be telling lies. There are also Scrum Debates, which splits the students into two groups who believe opposing theories. Finding keywords within the other’s argument helps settle debates. Then there are Mass Panic Debates which take the same format as Non-stop Debates except multiple people are voicing their opinions at the same time. It’s up to you to weed through all the voices and find the truth.

Killing Harmony is full of twists and turns. Everything from start to finish is important, so be sure you’re paying attention. As I said before, this game left the fandom divided as people either loved it or hated it. I, for one, still don’t know how I feel about what goes down. All I can say for sure without spoiling anything is that Killing Harmony definitely acts as a conclusion to the entire Danganronpa franchise.

Regardless of how it ends, the game is a fun experience with great characters you can’t help but fall in love with. Killing Harmony is harder than the others because all of the class trials are complicated and full of discrepancies and misdirects. Plus, there’s the added layer of you being able to tell a lie. For fans of the series, it’s definitely worth a play. For those who don’t know anything about, I would suggest picking up Danganronpa 1-2 Reload. The story and the characters make the series worth it.
