Tom Cruise Shares Insights on Preparing for Iconic Roles
In a recent interview, Tom Cruise provided fans with a glimpse into his preparation process for his iconic roles, particularly within the “Mission: Impossible” franchise.
Cruise, who is 60 years old, divulged that he dedicates his time to acting and producing seven days a week. However, he also emphasized the importance of training for the daring stunts featured in his films.
“As both an actor and in my personal life, I’ve always trained to enhance my performances in movies,” Cruise revealed to Fandango. “I engage in various forms of training, such as singing, dancing, motorcycles, and cars. Additionally, in my personal life, I find enjoyment in activities like skydiving and speed-flying. I like to explore and acquire new skills and then apply them to my film projects.”
He acknowledged the challenge of finding the right balance in his training routine, stating, “It’s quite a feat, and I’ve had to figure out how to train effectively, maintain peak performance, and hit the mark precisely when needed. For instance, during a sprinting scene, it’s not just a single run. There have been days when I’ve done 50 sprints in a row.”
Cruise continued, “I have to consider the recovery time, the scenes before and after, and I’ve become better at structuring my preparations within the film. I analyze and plan ahead, determining when to prepare for a motorcycle jump or adjust my body for gymnastics or a fight scene. It’s essential not to engage in a fight right before a sprint. How do I prepare? How do I recover?”
For Cruise, the pressure that comes with his work is something he finds enjoyable. He shared, “I work seven days a week, and I’m involved in producing and managing various aspects during this time period.”
He added, “I must say, I relish the pressure. I enjoy the challenge, and when I wake up, I genuinely appreciate what I do.”
Recently, the co-stars of Cruise’s latest film, “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” shared their experiences working alongside the renowned actor. Simon Pegg, who first met Cruise on the set of “Mission: Impossible III” in 2006, described Cruise as a unique individual.
“Amongst all the buzz surrounding him, at the core of it all is a kind and generous person who takes care of everyone,” Pegg expressed to “E! News.” “He leads by example, and his presence is inspiring. There is no one else like him; he embodies the last of the old-fashioned movie stars.”
Pegg highlighted that Cruise’s caring nature has remained constant since their initial meeting nearly two decades ago. “When I first met him, it was my first time in Hollywood,” Pegg shared. “On our first day on set, he immediately made me feel welcome and comfortable. He was incredibly generous.”
Hayley Atwell, a newcomer to the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, echoed Pegg’s sentiments about Cruise. “I had the opportunity to read with Tom before, and I knew he was very present,” Atwell said. “He is highly professional and makes a concerted effort to ensure that everyone working with him feels safe and supported.”
Tom Cruise continues to captivate audiences with his dedication and passion for his craft. Whether he is hanging off the side of a plane or performing intense stunts, Cruise’s commitment to his roles shines through in his performances.
