“Fetch” may never be happening but, a Mean Girls musical is happening!
Earlier this week, during a Q&A session at the Tribeca Film Festival, Tina Fey chatted with TV Guide’s Damian Holbrook about a Mean Girls musical being developed. Fey originally disclosed the idea of the upcoming musical last month however, now that she has a brief hiatus from “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”, it looks like some more focus will be dedicated the musical’s development.
Tina Fey said, “We’re working on the musical adaptation. Thanks to Ellie Kemper’s pregnancy, we have all summer to work onit.” Grool! We mean, Cool!
Though the musical is in the early stages, Fey explained she’s trying to figure out how closely she wants to stay to the original 2004 (can you believe it’s over 10 years old?) movie script as some of the references and scenarios may be outdated.
“The thing about social media is that it doesn’t dramatize well, but it’s been an ongoing question. Do you take out things that are now outdated? Like three-way calling is not a thing,” explained Fey.
She did, jokingly, give a preview of what the show might sound like, in the style of the Broadway musical Hamilton. She started rapping the possible opening number, “How does a mathlete, chess king…”
As a huge fan of the movie, I can’t wait for this to become a thing and, I hope there’s an entire musical number dedicated to Glenn Coco. You go, Glenn Coco!
What do you think about a Mean Girls musical? Let’s get creative! What are some song titles that you would like to see in the musical adaptation of the movie?
