May the fourth be with you: Why Star Wars Day matters

It started as a silly pun.

May the fourth be with you.

Today, it is now a celebration of everything related to Star Wars. From the prequels (and all things Jar-Jar) to the awesomeness of The Force Awakens and the forthcoming sequels and anthology films like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. All things Star Wars. And those of us who count ourselves as “Followers of the Force,” it is a day that will hopefully be long remembered. Yes, even the silliness of some merchandising of nearly everything Star Wars and putting it on seemingly everything in existence, to the weirdness of certain stories (clones of Emperor Palpatine ring a bell to anyone?). It all matters and it is ours, and we love it all. Even those who hate certain aspects of the franchise (the prequels, the Expanded Universe becoming “Legends” and no longer canon to name two things that fans have made outcries about), will still stick around for Star Wars. We will debate whether to watch the movies in chronological order (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens) or in the order the films were released. Or perhaps even to watch them in what is sometimes known as the machete order. Or whether the blu-ray cut of the film should even count! Maybe we should only count the original print of the films, which some do. We will discuss whether The Thrawn Trilogy, now regulated to the Legends banner, can somehow be salvaged and put into canon. Or even whether Mara Jade Skywalker, Luke’s wife in the “Legends,” could possibly be Luke’s wife in the sequel era.

Anything under the sun Star Wars fans will discuss , debate, and even create art for it. Below are videos known as “Star Wars: Uncut,” where fans were invited to film a section of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. If you have the time to watch the whole thing, they are amazingly awesome.

Then of course, there is the awesome Darth Maul fan made film. So good, I would even contend it should be canon.

From art, to the printed word, to the movies, it is something that is amazing, beautiful, weird, strange, cool and beautiful all at once. It may not be perfect, but like everything in life, we love it. It is Star Wars, and millions across the globe love it and unite in our love for Star Wars, despite our backgrounds. And it all takes place a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…..

May the Force be with you and happy Star Wars Day!
