Matt Smith is in final talks to co-star in Sony’s next Spider-Man spin-off, Morbius, which revolves around the villain of the same name, played by Suicide Squad‘s Joker, Jared Leto.
Despite making the jump to light speed in a galaxy far far away, Matt Smith looks to be joining the superhero realm. His role in Episode IX is currently unknown (surprise, surprise) and so is his role in Morbius. The Time Lord certainly knows how to keep a secret.
The Living Vampire, Morbius, was created by Roy Thomas and designed by Gil Kane in 1971 when he first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #101. Dr. Michael Morbius, who will be played by Leto, was a scientist suffering from a rare blood disease and in an attempt to cure his disease… he accidentally turned himself into a vampire. Hey, there are weirder origins out there. Gaining super strength, fangs, and an accelerated healing factor, Morbius fought Spider-Man before starring in his own series where he became a brooding antihero.
So far the project is being helmed by Daniel Espinosa who directed Life and Safe House. The co-creators of Netflix’s Lost in Space, Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless are writing the script, Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are set to produce Morbius with Lucas Foster while Palak Patel oversees the project for Sony.
Morbius will continue to expand the shared universe based on characters from the Spider-Man comics. However, considering his popularity in comparison to Venom, it’s hard to say whether Morbius has the potential to bring in the same box office that Venom did which was over $850 million globally.
At the moment, Morbius does not have a release date but will most likely be released after the Venom sequel in 2020. Or, Sony could be looking to adopt Marvel’s approach and release multiple films each year with a potential crossover. Who knows.
Are you excited for Morbius? Who would you like to see in Sony’s shared universe? Kraven? Lizard? maybe even Jackal? Let us know in the comments below.
