Marvel & Sony’s ‘Morbius’ Now Owns the Second-Worst CinemaScore Ever

Morbius is the latest example of a superhero film that has been panned by critics but nonetheless performs well with audiences, following in the footsteps of some notoriously bad comic book adaptations.

Jared Leto’s debut as the Living Vampire has plummeted to a terrible 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the worst-rated Marvel blockbusters on the site. In fact, Fantastic Four, Elektra, and Howard the Duck are all lower than director Daniel Espinosa’s failure, which is hardly the sort of place Morbius wants to find itself.

Despite the fact that RT’s user rating is at a significantly higher 69%, CinemaScore has done its best to add salt to the wound. The opening night crowds gave Morbius a C+ grade, making it tied with Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance for the second-worst reception ever given to a Marvel-backed production.

The Fantastic Four received a C- grade, but it’s still another dose of terrible news for an supernatural actioner that most people were expecting to bomb. One good thing is that Morbius will easily top the box office this weekend, but a jam-packed April might result in takings plummeting off a cliff over the next few weeks.

Michael Bay’s Ambulance, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, The Bad Guys, The Northman, and Liam Neeson’s Memory are all on the way and will overtake Morbius.
