According to Variety, Marvel is shutting the doors to its television division. Other than the shows that are currently in production, Marvel will not be moving forward with the development of any other televisions shows.
Marvel movies boss Kevin Feige is producing shows for Disney Plus featuring characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The only Marvel Television live-action show currently in the works is “Helstrom” at Hulu. Hulu had previously ordered a live-action “Ghost Rider” series starring Gabriel Luna as well, but that project was scrapped in September. Marvel also has four animated shows at Hulu: “Howard the Duck,” “Hit Monkey,” “Tigra & Dazzler,” and “M.O.D.O.K.”
Fellow Marvel-Hulu series “The Runaways” will end with its upcoming third season, while “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” will end after seven seasons on ABC this spring. All of Marvel Television’s other live-action shows have been canceled in the past year, including all of the shows on Netflix. However, there’s been speculation that the Netflix based superheros will make a return in the future to the MCU.
The DC Universe has thrived on television, with the bulk of its shows on The CW and currently in the middle of it’s mega-crossover, ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths.’ Like Marvel’s move to streaming on the Disney Plus platform, DC has its own streaming service. DC’s shows on its service, such as “Titans” and “Doom Patrol.”
Marvel’s move doesn’t come as a surprise, as Disney shores up it’s control on all of its Marvel properties to get viewers to head only to its Disney Plus platform.
