Actor Hugo Weaving portrayed the role of villain Red Skull in 2011’s The First Avenger.
Rumors spreading this week that teased a possible Avengers 4 trailer have fans all worked up and we’ve got Marvel on the mind!
Despite the questions they combat every minute, the film’s directors, the Russo brothers, sat down with a crowd of fans and press this week to give some fun insight to all things Avengers and Marvel.
The event was put on by Collider and ArcLight Cinemas presented as An Evening With The Russo Brothers.
According to a series of tweets from Slashfilm’s Peter Sciretta, Red Skull was discussed pretty heavily during the event.
In Avengers: Infinity War, Red Skull appeared as the guardian of The Soul Stone, the final stone Thanos needed to kill off half of the globe’s population. He was played by The Walking Dead star Ross Marquand, who plays Aaron in the apocalypse.
We hadn’t seen Red Skull since Captain America: Civil War, and the Russo Brothers explained where he’s been all that time. He’s been on a journey and is now a space to the stones. Essentially he’s a ghost.
The brothers revealed that Hugo Weaving was definitely asked to reprise the role, and perhaps didn’t want to.
“That’s all the Russo Brothers would say,” Sciretta tweets.
Red Skull has been on a journey since the events of Captain America. He is now a space to the stones, he is a ghost. They played around with it not being him but they kept coming back to it being Red Skull. The screenwriters, who wrote First Avenger, fought for it.

While on the topic, the brothers explained that the Soul Stone has the ability to manipulate your soul and everything you are. Thanos uses it to pull Strange out of his body into many Stranges. He also uses it to speak to his daughter (now dead by his own hand) Gamora.
There’s no word on whether Marquand will be back in the role for Avengers 4, or if Red Skull will even appear in it.
Walking Dead creator sat with Marquand last weekend after the mid-season final of the zombie series and asked Marquand the question directly.
Marquand replied, “I don’t know. I can’t answer that question. I really don’t know.”
We think he did a grand job as the villain-turned ghost, do you?
