Marvel and LucasFilm Will Move from Netflix to New Disney Streaming Service

Last month, Disney made the shocking announcement that it would be pulling its content from Netflix in order to start up their own streaming service platform.  This decision would effectively remove all Disney films from Netflix by 2019.  While the decision was final for Walt Disney Productions, there was still active discussions and negotiations taking place surrounding LucasFilm and Marvel productions.  Could those films possibly stay with Netflix?

As it turns out, during an investor’s meeting today, CEO Bob Iger said that Marvel and LucasFilm movies will definitely be moving to the new Disney streaming service.  According to Deadline, Iger told the Bank of Ameria Merrill Lynch 2017 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference, “We’re going to launch big, and we’re going to launch hot.”

When asked about pricing for the new service, he stated those details weren’t quite finalized yet but said, “we intend to get more specific about that in the months ahead.”

Iger anticipates four or five new original series and three or four Disney films per year being added to the new service.  Last month, Iger announced the new service by saying, “We’re building direct-to-consumer Disney service. We’ve had a good relationship with Netflix. They have been distributing in the pay window Disney-branded movies and Pixar-branded movies, Marvel, and Star Wars.  We had a deal that gave us the option to move our films from the Netflix platform to somewhere else — starting with the calendar year 2019 slate and that’s what we’re doing. So we’re creating a Disney-branded service that will have those movies on it, and if you look at the 2019 slate, it includes Frozen 2Toy Story 4, and a live-action remake of Lion King.”
