On Monday, Madonna took to Twitter and uploaded a photo of herself in response to the plastic surgery rumors that have swirled around her recently. She added an unequivocal caption, firmly pushing back against anyone who suggested she had undergone any sort of facial work.

“Look how cute i am now that swelling from surgery has gone down,” she wrote, adding an “lol” and a laughing emoji.

In the image, she is leaning back in a relaxed pose with her legs crossed and wearing cornrow braids crowned by a hat that reads “Spiritually Hungry.”

Rumors and gossip about Madonna’s look began to swirl when she graced the stage at the esteemed Grammy Awards of this year.

While some interpret her statement as a confirmation that she has had plastic surgery, others think it is just an ironic response to the gossip surrounding her.

It wouldn’t be beyond the realm of possibility to believe both scenarios are true— her having undergone surgery and simultaneously making light of it.

Two days after the Grammys, the 64-year-old fired back at her critics with a lengthy post on Instagram.

She joyfully began her address by expressing how thrilled she was to present the “history making” performance of Kim Petras and Sam Smith.

She wrote in part, “Instead of focusing on what I said in my speech which was about giving thanks for the fearlessness of artists like Sam and Kim – Many people chose to only talk about Close-up photos of me Taken with a long lens camera By a press photographer that Would distort anyone’s face!!”

Madonna added that she’s “never apologized” for her appearance throughout her career, “and I’m not going to start.”

“I am happy to do the trailblazing so that all the women behind me can have an easier time in the years to come.”
