Lightsabers or Vibranium? Chris Evans and Mark Hamill Enter the Debate
For as long as there have been fans, there have been nerdy debates about everything from “who would win a fight between..?.” and “whose costume is better than…?”.
However, in the social media era, actors can contribute to the debate and weigh in with their almost expert opinions – seeing as they already know their characters better than we do.
Most recently, “Can a lightsaber cut through Captain America’s shield?” has been the debate online. Mark Hamill himself chimed in and said that it depends on which universe the battle is taking place in.
In the #MarvelUniverse– NO
In the #StarWarsUniverse– Luke wouldn’t fight a hero, but if asked to do so, he could cut it into a million little pieces. https://t.co/9fHurwhBNl— Mark Hamill (@HamillHimself) June 27, 2018
Mark Hamill avoids the question in a way that makes sense because lightsabers do not exist in the Marvel Universe, and in the same way, vibranium does not exist in the galaxy far far away. We do know that lightsabers in that galaxy can cut through essentially anything and most likely, no metal can shine a candle to lightsabers.
Chris Evans contributed to the debate as well and instead of arguing with Mark’s initial points, he says that having his shield cut to smithereens by a lightsaber could not put him out of the fight.
Foolish. Now I have vibranium ninja stars. https://t.co/V7ANPJW5wH

It seems unlikely that fans will ever get an answer to this question, but both weapons are some of the most powerful in their worlds. In Star Wars: The Force Awakens it was shown that it is possible for a non-Jedi to create a weapon that was capable of blocking a lightsaber’s blade, maybe it is possible that lightsabers have more limits than we are aware of. The idea that a naturally occurring element such as vibranium could defeat a naturally occurring element like the crystal in a lightsaber’s core is not so out of the box.
There will probably never be an answer to this question but that’s what makes it fun!
