Legends of Tomorrow Recap ‘The Legion of Doom’

The Legion of Doom has Rip and they have resorted to torture in order to get from him the location of the Spear of Destiny. Unfortunately, his mind is blank on all matters pertaining to his life as Rip. As he keeps reminding his captors, “My name is Phil.” However, when a tooth is removed, the Legion finds their first bit of information about the Spear: The number of a safety deposit box last accessed in 2025. Malcolm, Darhk, and Rip head there to try and get into the box, but things go wrong as Rip can’t remember his access code.

There is a bit of unrest between the three unlikely villains as Eobard treats Malcolm and Darhk as underlings. He is secretive and won’t reveal his full plan to Malcolm and Darhk. They know why the other wants the Spear; Malcolm to change the past, Darhk the future. But they don’t know why Eobard would want it since he can easily change time.  Eobard also speeds away at random moments without explaining why. Malcolm and Darhk squabble until Rip points out that Eobard probably wants them to be at each other’s throats. They form an alliance in order to trap the speedster and get what they want.

Aboard the Waverider, the Legends try to figure out the identity of the speedster and how to use the amulet they stole back from the Legion. Ray gets to work on the amulet, but needs a bit of help. Stein retrieves his daughter from 2017. Everyone is surprised by her existence and Stein doesn’t want them to reveal the truth of her birth. But naturally, Mick lets it slip. She is upset that she wasn’t something that Stein ever wanted, but in a really nice heart-to-heart, they work through their feelings. She even calls him “Dad” and my heart swelled. She unfortunately returns to 2017 after helping Ray patch the amulet into Gideon. I liked having her around.

The others are busy dealing with the speedster. They have records of every speedster known to the Time Masters, but they can’t figure out what motive any of them would have. That’s when they break down the equation and involve the Spear. Why would a speedster want to change all of reality? Nate hits upon the answer. He no longer exists. This would also explain why there were no records of him. That’s when Stein joins their brainstorming session and offers them the answer: Eobard. Now that they know who they are dealing with, they can formulate a plan to get the Spear and save Rip.

Malcolm and Darhk break into the vault with the security deposit box and find some sort of drive. Eobard appears to snatch it away from them. He says that the drive holds all of Rip’s memories. Malcolm and Darhk close the door to the vault, telling Eobard that the only way he can get out is if he agrees to treat them as equals. Eobard is jumpy and demands to be released, saying that something is coming for him. And indeed it has.

Eobard has been constantly running in order to stop time from catching up and finally erasing him from existence. Enter Black Flash, a demon of a speedster that could possibly be all that remains of our dear Hunter Zolomon, aka Zoom. Zoom was the main antagonist during the second season of The Flash, and met his demise by being pulled into the Speed Force by Time Wraiths. Anyway, Eobard has been running from Black Flash, who will end his existence. Malcolm and Darhk agree to help Eobard if he will acknowledge them as equals. He agrees. The three manage to trap Black Flash in the vault before heading back to their headquarters.

Eobard boots up the drive and starts messing with Rip’s memories. He says he wants to make a few adjustments before returning them to their owner. The final scene of the episode is Rip appearing in George Washington’s tent in 1776 and shooting him.

I really liked this episode. It was fun to see more of Malcolm and Darhk together. Their scenes in season 4 of Arrow were short and not nearly as entertaining. I especially loved their fights. In Arrow, Darhk relied mostly on his mystical powers, but here, he really shows that he was a previous member of the League of Assassins. Now that the three are all on the same page, it’ll be interesting to see what they’ll do.

Next week, the Legends will head to 1776 to protect George Washington in the episode titled ‘Turncoat.’
