Lauren Cohan Talks Life Beyond ‘The Walking Dead’

Lauren Cohan’s new movie Mile 22 hits theaters this weekend marking just the first step to The Walking Dead star’s life after the AMC series.

In addition to her new film, she will also be starring in a brand new series on ABC called Whiskey Cavalier in which she plays a badass CIA operative named Francesca “Frankie” Trowbridge (codename: “Fiery Tribune”). Both of her new roles in Mile 22 and in Whiskey Cavalier are certainly departures from her apocalypse-bound character on The Walking Dead. As she prepares to leave behind the show that she’s called home for eight years, in a recent interview with the Associated Pressshe says she’s excited at the opportunity ahead to play some lighter faring roles. Cohan said:

[row]“Eight years is a really long time to be in those emotional depths and it’s really fun for me because I never thought about drama as much when I started this career, and I always kind of assumed I’d do like light fare.”[/row]

Cohan stars opposite Mark Wahlberg in Mile 22. Wahlberg plays a secret CIA operative who, along with a top-secret tactical command team, has been tasked with retrieving and transporting an asset who holds life-threatening information to Mile 22 for extraction before the enemy closes in on them.

Cohan tells AP that she particularly enjoyed playing this role because of the amazing dialogue that’s written in the film. She said:

[row]“It’s fun to play the witty dialogue and I always love in Pete’s movies how there are a lot of normal people with interesting conversations. It always feels like you’re opening a window into real life.”[/row]

In addition to talking about Mile 22, Cohan also spoke about ABC’s Whiskey Cavalier in which she stars opposite Scott Foley. Cohan said the role was challenging but not for reasons you may expect. She said:

[row]“The hardest part is not laughing. They have this wonderful ‘Moonlighting’ vibe,” she said. “I’m an emotional character with a steely exterior and the guys are much more in touch with their feelings. It’s funny! It’s great. It’s a really fun departure for me.”[/row]

At this time, Cohan’s future on The Walking Dead still remains a question mark. In a recent interview, Cohan commented that Maggie’s story is still open-ended. She said, “I’m so grateful that this has been my stomping ground for so long, and my family here is never gone. Maggie’s story is open-ended.”

In addition to Cohan’s semi-departure from the series, star Andrew Lincoln (who plays Rick Grimes) confirmed his speculated exit back in July. Both Cohan and Lincoln are said to appear in just six episodes in the upcoming season, but fans will have to wait and see what will become of their favorite characters.

The Walking Dead will return to AMC with new episodes starting on October 7th.
