As Kong is slowly trickling out of theaters, we just got news in that it will soon stomp into a different type of theater.

That’s right. The big monkey is coming to Broadway!

And guess what? This has been in the works for years!

Producers Global Creatures and Roy Furman announced the news Wednesday. The stage adaptation of Kong has been sitting pretty, and the new book will be written by the playwright of ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Jack Thorne who is an Olivier Award winner.

How will the giant ape come to life you ask? Through a combination of animatronics and puppetry, similarly to that of the beasts in Walking with Dinosaurs and How to Train Your Dragon arena shows.

The stage adaptation of Kong is described as a contemporary take on Beauty and The Beast-and it is based on the novel of the original 1933 Merian C. Cooper and Edgar Wallace screenplay.

The score is composed by Marius de Vries who contributed to those of La La Land, Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet. with songs by Broadway composer Eddie Perfect.

Drew McOnie will direct and choreograph. He is known for helming the London production of In the Heights as well as Jesus Christ Superstar and Strictly Ballroom The Musical.

Earlier this spring, Kong: Skull Island hit theaters and made $564 million worldwide. (It’s actually still in select theaters shockingly enough-I saw it yesterday.) The musical will hit just before the debut of the next film Godzilla vs. Kong.

Look out for Kong at the Shubert theater after the current limited engagement of Miss Saigon ends there in fall 2018.
