ABC’s revival of the reality singing contest American Idol is starting to to come together!  Last week, the network announced that the series would officially be returning to air during get 2017-2018 season.  Immediately, chatter and speculation began regarding who the network would contract with as judges and as host.

The original American Idol Kelly Clarkson was rumored to be in talks with the series but ended up landing a spot as a season 14 judge on NBC’s The VoiceOthers rumored to be in negotiations include pop singer Katy Perry, season 5 contestant and fourth runner up Chris Daughtry and season 4 winner Carrie Underwood.

As part of ABC’s upfront presentations on Tuesday, Katy Perry was officially announced as the first judge on the revival series.  Shortly after the announcement was made by ABC, Perry tweeted her excitement saying, “SO thrilled @ABCNetwork is bringing back @AmericanIdol, and I”m bringing it back to the MUSIC! [See] you at auditions!”

In an official statement released by ABC, Perry continued to express her excitement to be apart of the series:

“I am honored and thrilled to be the first judge bringing back the American Idoltradition of making dreams come true for incredible talents with authentic personalities and real stories.  I’m always listening to new music, and love discovering diamonds in the rough – from mentoring young artists on my label, or highlighting new artists on my tours, I want to bring it back to the music.”

Added ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey:

“We are thrilled to be ushering in this new era of American Idol with Katy leading the charge. Her incredible accolades speak for themselves. We are so lucky to have this strong and talented woman help inspire and guide the next crop of artists as they pursue their dreams.”

So, for those keeping count, that’s one down, 2 more to go for judges and, one host still needed for the series to actually run.  Rumors of Ryan Seacrest’s involvement continue to be just that, rumors.  Seacrest recently took on a new role at cohost along side Kelly Ripa for their morning show Live with Kelly and Ryan.  There is no confirmation yet if he will return to also host American Idol though, the possibility is a good one considering both shows are on the same network.
