Justin Timberlake Announced as Super Bowl LII Halftime Show Headliner

The stage is officially set for the Pepsi Super Bowl LII Halftime Show and Justin Timberlake has landed the honor of headlining the event.  While Timberlake has performed during the halftime show twice before, this will be his first year as the headliner.

Timberlake made the announcement via his social media pages with the help of his friend Jimmy Fallon.  Check out the cute video announcement below:

Timberlake also sat down with Mike Tirico from NBC Sports to discuss his upcoming performance and, of course, to address that infamous 2004 wardrobe malfunction performance with Janet Jackson.

During the interview, Timberlake said he hopes to put on a show of unity that will bring audiences together and just let everyone have a good time.  He said:

“What I really want to do is take the opportunity to put together a performance that feels like it unifies.  I feel like that would be the ultimate accomplishment, and then the icing on the cake is at some point, within that 12 minutes, that everybody is shaking their booty.”

Tirico asked Timberlake about the wardrobe malfunction.  When asked if he was warned/scolded or asked for assurance that there would be no such repeat of that incident before being invited back to headline this year, Timberlake said:

“That won’t happen this time. There was a little bit of that. But…no, Mike, that’s not going to happen.”

So what can fans expect from Justin Timberlake’s halftime show?  One thing’s for sure, he’s doing his research!  Timberlake said he’s studying up on past halftime performances to make sure that his show is unique and engaging.  Timberlake said:

“I’ve already watched a ton of them just to make sure that were not pulling out any gags you know — people are flying, and Lady Gaga jumped from the top of the stadium or something.  I don’t know, man. I’m 36 now. I don’t know how much of that I can do anymore. When I look back at Super Bowl halftime shows that I’ve participated in and former ones of other artists like Beyonce, Bruno [Mars], Coldplay.  And then legends like Michael [Jackson], Bruce [Springsteen],  I think that U2 performance, based on what was happening in the world at the time, the hair on the back of my neck stands up just thinking about it.”
