Judge Orders New Tests on Evidence Related to the ‘Making a Murderer’ Steven Avery Trial

New updates in the Making a Murderer real life trial of Steven Avery have been announced this week.  Avery, who was convicted of murdering photographer Teresa Halbach in 2007, may have a new chance of proving his innocence thanks to a dramatic turn of events involving a new agreement which will allow past evidence to be revisited.

The agreement was filed with Judge Angela Sutkiewicz on Wednesday and will allow independent scientific testing on several critical pieces of evidence, including a vial of what is said to be Avery’s blood.

Avery’s lawyer, Kathleen Zellner has said that the attorney general’s office was “helpful in expediting these tests.”  Earlier this year, Zellner had pledged that she has a plan to overturn Avery’s 2007 conviction and it looks like that plan may now be in motion.

This news comes just weeks after Avery’s nephew, Brendan Dassey, had his sentence overturned and was released from prison.  Both Steven Avery and his nephew, Brendan Dassey, were charged with murdering photographer, Teresa Halbach in 2005.  Avery and Dassey’s lawyers insisted this was a wrongful conviction and the entire trial was documented through Netflix’s hit series, Making a Murderer.  The series took a look at the evidence presented, possible corruption within the investigation and the structure of the trial itself, allowing viewers of the series to form their own opinions of Avery and Dassey’s guilt or innocence.

Earlier this year, it was also announced that the series would be back for a season 2.  We can now guess that the second season will follow the journey to overturning Dassey’s conviction and whatever new evidence comes as a result of this testing.
