Joker fans, get your popcorn ready! Joker arrives on digital platforms starting December 17. A few weeks later, the film will be released on Blu-ray, DVD and 4K on January 7, 2020 on and is available for pre-order.

Todd Phillips’ Joker has taken the world by surprise. It has received an avalanche of raving reviews and has exceeded box office expectations. Forbes has reported that Joker is the most profitable comic movie in history.

Its current global box office actually equates to 15 times its production budget. The villain-centered movie had a budget of just $62.5 million. In terms of budget versus global gross, this makes Joker the most profitable comic book movie surpassing the likes of Venom ($854 million box office/$90 million budget) and Deadpool ($783 million/$58 million). What an incredible achievement.

I think the next question to put forward would be whether it’s financial success will push Warner Brothers to consider a sequel of some description. Will we get a follow on story or could we see another character receive the “Joker-treatment”? Sounds like it’s a real possibility, as all parties seem to be moving towards making it happen.

Director Todd Phillips said, “Here’s the real truth about a sequel. While Joaquin and I have talked about it, and while touring the world with Warner Bros executives — going to Toronto, and Venice, and other places — of course, we’re sitting at dinner and they’re saying, ‘So, have you thought about…?’”

He continued, “But, talking about contracts, there’s not a contract for us to even write a sequel, we’ve never approached Joaquin to be in a sequel. Will that happen? Again, I just think the article was anticipatory at best.”

Joker, having been the most profitable comic book and R-rated film in history, would clearly demand a sequel by both fans and the studio. Like all great things, they just take time and there appears to be no rush to get Joker 2 to the public.

What do you think about the prospect of Joker 2? Or, are you ready for another origin story first, such as The Penguin or another great Batman villain?
