‘Joker’ Becomes Most Profitable Comic Book Movie

Todd Phillips’ Joker has taken the world by surprise. It has received an avalanche of raving reviews and has exceeded box office expectations. I never imagined that it would be this successful but I am incredibly glad that it is.

As of today, Joker has grossed $984,691,507 worldwide according to Box Office Mojo. It has a split of 31.8% domestically (roughly $313 million) and 68.2% worldwide (roughly $671 million). However, the twisted origin story hasn’t stopped just yet. In fact, it is incredibly close to reaching $1 billion. If it does dance across $1 billion mark, it will be the first R-rated movie to do so.

However, until that happens we’re actually here to celebrate another achievement. Forbes has reported that Joker is now the most profitable comic movie in history.

Its current global box office actually equates to 15 times its production budget. The villain-centered movie had a budget of just $62.5 million. In terms of budget versus global gross, this makes Joker the most profitable comic book movie surpassing the likes of Venom ($854 million box office/$90 million budget) and Deadpool ($783 million/$58 million). What an incredible achievement.

Now, when Joker does surpass $1 billion, something that is incredibly likely, it will also be the cheapest movie to do so. When you look at the highest grossing movies of all time, and look at the Marvel movies for example, you’ll notice that their budgets usually exceed $100 million. Jurassic Park is currently the cheapest $1 billion grossing movie with a budget of $63 million. So it’s incredibly close. Regardless of how close, what Joker has achieved is amazing and I think it caught many of us by surprise.

I think the next question to put forward would be whether it’s financial success will push Warner Brothers to consider a sequel of some description. Will we get a follow on story or could we see another character receive the “Joker-treatment”?

Joker is still in cinema so don’t miss your chance to see it. You can also read our review of Joker right here
