Community star Joel McHale has been cast to play Starman in the DC Universe’s upcoming live-action series Stargirl.
Starman, a.k.a. Sylvester Pemberton is a socialite who fights crime with the help of his Cosmic Staff, a mysterious anti-gravity weapon. Starman debuted in the early ’40s and is a member of the Justice Society of America.
The recurring role is being described as “Golden Age Starman.”
Stargirl will focus on a high school sophomore, Courtney Whitmore (Bree Bassinger) who learns that her new stepfather, Pat Dugan, used to be Stripesy, Starman’s sidekick. She then finds the Cosmic Staff and uses it to fight evil as Stargirl, inspiring a new generation of heroes to follow in the Justice Society’s footsteps.
Stargirl will premiere on the DC Universe streaming service in 2019. It is executive-produced by Greg Berlanti, Geoff Johns, and Sarah Schechter.
