Joaquin Phoenix to Star in DC’s Joker Origin Film

DC has made many changes over the past six months including bringing on Walter Hamada as the new President of DC Films. This week, it was also announced that DC Entertainment was getting a new president (Jim Lee), as Geoff Johns takes on a wider role with Warner Brothers.

This left DC’s film lineup solely up to Hamada, who has chosen another Joker film to set on course. Separate from the Joker standalone film which is set to star Jared Leto, there will also be a Joker origin film. This one will star Joaquin Phoenix. Todd Phillips will direct and the film will begin filming this Fall, according to THR.

Martin Scorsese will executive produce with a $55 million budget. This seems small for a film of it’s stature, but is said to be the first of many projects meant to separate DC’s darker properties from some new lighters ones that are in the pipeline. One of the terms being played with for the more somber side, is “DC Dark”.

Wonder Woman 2 will join Zachary Levi’s Shazam in the 2019 lineup so far.

A ‘Back to the Future’ style film version of The Flash starring Ezra Miller as Scarlett Speedster is set to begin production in early 2019. It’s safe to say that one will touch upon the lighter themes that DC are trying to add into the franchise.

Some other upcoming DC projects include a Harley Quinn spinoff starring Margot Robbie, (who made her mark on the role in Suicide Squad), and a Batgirl film with script by Bumblebee screenwriter Christina Hodson. There is also The Batman, helmed by Matt Reeves, which will most likely not star Ben Affleck.
