J.K. Rowling herself has confirmed the backstory to the North American school of magic. Ilvermorny dates back to the 17th century atop Massachusett’s Mount Greylock.

The origin tale is actually kind of sad.

Isolt Sayre (1603) was born into a pure-blood family in Ireland. Her family was attacked when she was five and she was kidnapped by the attacker, Gormlaith Gaunt. Gormlaith refused to let Isolt attend Hogwarts when she turned eleven and kept her in isolation.

About twelve years later, Isolt stole her captor’s wand and fled the country. She pretended to be a muggle boy on the Mayflower in 1620.  (Muggles are known as ‘No-Majs’ in the American wizarding community, from ‘No Magic’).

She met two creatures in America: A Hidebehind, it can contort itself to hide behind almost any object, concealing itself perfectly from hunters and victims alike, and a Pukwudgie, a short, grey-faced, large-eared creature distantly related to the European goblin. Isolt saved the Pukwudgie from the Hidebehind and he vowed to be faithful to her for that. (His name is William)

After traveling for a while the pair came across that same Hidebehind who injured two small boys: Chadwick and Webster. The place where she nursed the boys and James Steward was dubbed Ilvermorny.

The four became a family. And when they were older, the boys and Isolt would start a school of magic in their own little cottage. Their only knowledge of school was what they knew about Hogwarts so naturally the school needed houses based on their favorite magical beast: Thunderbird, for Chadwick, Pukwudgie for James, Wampus for Webster, and Horned Serpent for Isolt.

By the time the youngest boy turned eleven, news of the school spread, more people became interested in attending.

By 1634 the home school had grown into something Isolt had never imagined and thus Ilvermorny was founded.
